Winter Getaways for Every Budget

FEB 10 featured image.jpgWINTER CAN DO a number on your normally cheerful disposition. The extra hours of darkness in December and January can wreak havoc on your circadian rhythms and leave you feel sluggish at best and depressed at worst. If that weren't enough, the onslaught of cold winds, rain, sleet and snow may make you want to hide away until spring finally shows up.

If you're feeling the full weight of winter on your shoulders this season, why not get away from it for a bit? A long weekend getaway could be just the thing to shake off the seasonal blues and recharge to get through the rest of the winter. You don't have to spend a fortune – though you can, if you have it! Try our ideas for a winter getaway. We've arranged them from farthest away to close to home choices, so you're sure to find one that works for you.

Get Tropical

The end-all trip for anyone suffering under the strain of winter is to a sunny island paradise. Mexico, the Bahamas, Aruba, the Dominican Republic – there are dozens of white sand beaches calling your name. If you don't have a passport ready to go, there are plenty of warm spots stateside, even in the dead of winter. Hawaii and the Florida Keys are good choices, and you don't have to worry about not knowing the language!

Hit the Desert

golfing in desert.jpgIf you don't love the beach but still want to feel the sun on your face, try a trip to a desert locale. Phoenix and Scottsdale are great for golfing, Las Vegas has all the restaurants and entertainment you could hope for, and  Palm Springs offers perfect spas for total relaxation. You can also enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, cycling and horseback riding without worrying about keeping an eye to the sky for precipitation.

Play in the Snow

This may sound counterintuitive, but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Sometimes winter looks better if you just embrace it, so consider a trip to the mountains for a ski weekend to make winter fun again. If you don't ski, most resorts offer tubing, sleigh rides and skating, or you can just grab some snowshoes and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Paint the Town Red

For fun that's closer to home, hit the big city for a weekend of pampering. Camp out in a luxurious hotel and treat yourself to a spa day complete with a relaxing massage. Take a nap on a king size mattress. Have an amazing dinner and see a show, then sleep in and call room service for breakfast. You don't have to travel far to recharge!

Try a Staycation

If a splurge on travel isn't in the cards for you right now, a staycation at home could be just what the doctor ordered. Stock up on a few good wines and order in a meal before taking a soak in a long, hot bubble bath. You can transform your bathroom into a Zen-like retreat with some candles and soft music before climbing into bed with a pile of magazines or a great novel. Unplug your phone and wake up without an alarm. Bliss!

No matter what your budget or how much time you can spare, you can get away from it all for at least a little bit this winter. Try one of these trips to recharge, and we promise you'll make it through!
